Jude Star

A picture of a Jude star, with the words 'Sans vaccin' (French for No Vaccine) in its centre.

Stars of David labeled "Jude" were used to identify Jewish prisoners in work and death camps run by Nazi Germany.

In 2020, they were appropriated as a symbol of pride for people who choose not to wear face masks as a measure against Covid-19, an expression of self-made comparisons to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Eventually it was adapted as an anti-vaccine symbol expressing the same rhetoric. Though this appropriation of Jude Stars may not intentionally be hateful, it relies on comparisons that drastically minimize the Holocaust in antisemitic and otherwise offensive manners.

Jude stars are also used in antisemitic memes to label Jewish targets. This is often done in a manner that is meant to rely on seemingly over-the-top imagery as a means of hate speech.
