Maurice Duplessis

A picture of Maurice Duplessis, whose eyes are shooting blue lasers.

Born in 1890, Maurice Duplessis was Premier of Québec from 1936 to 1939, and then from 1944 to 1959. Known for his socially conservative positions and fervent religiousness, Duplessis’ premiership is often referred to as "the Great Darkness". The so-called "Padlock Law" he implemented to combat the spread of communism in Québec, was used widely to target religious minorities, including Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ultra-traditionalist and ultra-nationalists in Québec often feature Duplessis in their memes, and view him as a symbol of their politics.
