In online memes, references to different colours of pills are used to express different levels of awareness, in a nod to the red pill and blue pill dichotomy presented in The Matrix movie series. In online hate communities, taking the red pill - or becoming "redpilled" - implies an awakening to the realities of the world and symbolizes radicalization, whereas the blue pill signals ignorance. Over time, other colours have been added: a white pill, for instance, holds the connotation of hope, whereas a black pill denotes nihilism. Despite their prominence in the lore of hateful communities, references to different colours of pills are often made online without nefarious intent.
